Maldanado wins ConCannon Award!
Gridiron Club of Greater Boston president Al Robichaud announced today that senior defenseman Tom Maldonado (Bronx, N.Y.) of Middlebury College is the winner of the eighth annual Joe Concannon Award, which recognizes New England's best American-born hockey player at the Division II-III level.
Maldonado, a native of the Bronx, NY, finished his career at Middlebury with an outstanding season, leading the Panthers in scoring with nine goals and 18 assists for 27 points. During his senior season, the durable defenseman passed both the 100 games played plateau as well as the 100 career point mark. He was team captain and a first-team All-NESCAC selection.

Trailing 62-61 with just five seconds remaining in the game, Lani Young's lay-up and free throw lifted Middlebury past Colby 64-62 in the NESCAC opener for both teams on Friday night at Pepin Gym. Young's late game heroics overshadowed a stellar 27-point performance by Colby's Alison Cappelloni. The Panthers (9-4, 1-0) return to NESCAC action on Saturday afternoon hosting Bowdoin.In the first half, Colby took an early 8-2 advantage by the 16:49 mark before Middlebury answered with an 8-0 run to lead 9-8 with 13:35 left. Ashton Coghlan scored 19 points off the bench to lift Middlebury to a 65-60 win at Colby in the NESCAC opener for both teams. The Panthers improve to 12-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference heading into Saturday's road game at Bowdoin. Colby falls to 9-6 overall and 0-1 in the league.
Coghlan had 11 of his 19 points in the opening half to help the Panthers battle back from a deficit. The Mules led 26-21 with 4:39 remaining in the half, but Middlebury went on a 14-3 run to hold a 35-29 lead at the intermission.

Middlebury scored five straight goals in the second period on its way to a 9-4 win over Bowdoin. The Panthers trailed the Polar Bears 2-1 after one period, but scored 8 of the game's next 9 goals to earn the win. Middlebury scored 9 goals on 17 shots on the night, but were outshot 20-17. The loss snaps a five-game winning streak for Bowdoin, who returns to action at Williams on Saturday. Middlebury hosts Colby at 4:00 on Saturday.
